The XC40 is a five-seat compact luxury crossover that continues to make its own trail in the segment. With two powerful and efficient engines, spacious seating and premium amenities, the XC40 continues to meet and beat the competition in several key areas. Here, we compare the XC40 to the BMW X1.
The XC40 offers three distinct trims - Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription - that offer trim level variety, appropriate pricing, and two engines. The BMW X1 offers only one trim level and one engine, so you have very little choice available to suit your needs.
The 2020 Volvo XC40 offers two engine options that offer a balance
The T4 AWD engine is a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 187 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque and has the best fuel efficiency of any X1 and other XC40 with a rating of 10.2/7.5 L/100 km (city/highway). This engine is standard on the Momentum trim.
The second engine available on the XC40 is the T5 AWD engine. It also is a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder and increases horsepower to 248 and torque to 258 lb-ft. The T5 is an option on the Momentum trim and standard on the Inscription and R-Design. This engine is more powerful than the X1's by 20 horsepower, but still has the same highway fuel consumption rating of 7.7 L/100 km.
One engine isn't enough to beat the 2020 Volvo XC40
The only engine for the BMW X1 is a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder that generates 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Overall, the XC40 has the most efficient and powerful engine options. An all-electric version of the XC40, the Recharge, is expected to be available in late 2020.
The XC40 and X1 both feature eight-speed automatic transmissions, but the XC40 adds a start/stop system and adaptive shifting. With a wider stance and slightly longer wheelbase, the Volvo also makes every use of the exterior design to contribute to agility and handling.
The XC40's interior features more front leg, front shoulder and rear shoulder room than the X1. The XC40 also makes available amenities you won't find on the X1, such as heated rear seats, Blind Spot Monitor and remote engine start. There are many other features to experience.
