How to Choose Between the 2026 Volvo XC60 Plug-In Hybrid and the 2027 Volvo EX60

Volvo builds two mid-size SUVs that let you drive on electricity, and each one does it in its own way. The 2026 XC60 T8 plug-in hybrid pairs a gas engine with an electric motor. The 2027 EX60 runs on electricity alone, with up to 531 km of range.Plug-in

Both seat five and both come with all-wheel drive. The right choice depends on three things: how far you drive, where you charge and what you carry. This guide puts the numbers side by side so you can decide with confidence.

Performance and Power

The XC60 T8 uses a 2.0 L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine and an electric motor. Together they produce 455 hp and 523 lb-ft of torque, sent through an 8-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels. The run from 0 to 100 km/h takes 4.8 seconds.

The EX60 P10 AWD produces 503 hp and 524 lb-ft of torque from its fully electric, all-wheel-drive powertrain. It reaches 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds. Electric power arrives the moment you press the pedal, with no gear changes along the way.

Both are quick, confident SUVs with a top speed of 180 km/h. Each has its own character: the XC60 can run on electricity, gas or both together, while the EX60 stays quiet and electric on every drive.

Range, Fuel and Charging

This is where the two SUVs differ most.

The XC60 plug-in hybrid travels up to 58 km on electricity. That covers many daily commutes and school runs. When the battery runs low, the gas engine takes over, backed by a 71 L fuel tank. It is rated at 8.5 L/100 km combined on gas and 3.5 Le/100 km combined when electricity is included.

The EX60 P10 AWD is certified by Natural Resources Canada for up to 531 km on 20-inch or 21-inch wheels, and up to 502 km on 22-inch wheels. Its 800-volt system is built for fast charging. Canadian deliveries of the EX60 P10 AWD are set to begin in late 2026.

  • Fast charging: The EX60 charges from 10 to 80 per cent in 18 minutes at a 400 kW DC fast charger.
  • Quick top-ups: The EX60 P10 AWD adds up to 265 km of range in 10 minutes.
  • Charging access: The EX60 has a native NACS port, which gives adapter-free access to more than 29,000 Tesla Superchargers across Canada and the United States.
  • Full charge: Charging the EX60 from 0 to 100 per cent takes 9 hours.

Space, Cargo and Towing

The EX60 is the larger of the two. It measures 4,803 mm long with a 2,970 mm wheelbase. The XC60 is 4,708 mm long with a 2,865 mm wheelbase, which makes it a little easier to fit into a tight garage or parking spot.

Behind the rear seats, the EX60 holds 523 L and the XC60 plug-in hybrid holds 468 L. Fold the seats and the EX60 opens up to 1,647 L, compared with 1,528 L in the XC60. The EX60 also adds a 52 L front storage compartment under the hood, a handy place for charging cables.

For towing, the EX60 P10 AWD is rated at 2,040 kg (4,497 lbs). The XC60 plug-in hybrid is rated at 1,580 kg (3,483 lbs).

Technology and Trims

The EX60 is the first Volvo to launch with Google Gemini, an assistant you can talk to in everyday language. It has a 15-inch centre display and an 11.4-inch driver display. A heat pump, one pedal drive and vehicle-to-load power are part of the package, along with Volvo's multi-adaptive front safety belts. The EX60 comes in two trims: Plus and Ultra.

The 2026 XC60 plug-in hybrid gives you more ways to tailor your SUV, with five trims: Core, Plus, Ultra, Black Edition Ultra and Polestar Engineered.

Which Volvo Is Right for You?

Start with your charging situation, then think about your longest regular drives.

Choose the 2026 XC60 plug-in hybrid if:

  • Most of your daily driving falls within 58 km and you can plug in at home.
  • You take long trips often and like the flexibility of a gas engine.
  • You want a wide choice of trims, from Core to Polestar Engineered.

Choose the 2027 EX60 if:

  • You are ready to drive without gas and want up to 531 km of range.
  • You have home charging and like the idea of 18-minute fast-charge stops on road trips.
  • You need more cargo room or plan to tow up to 2,040 kg (4,497 lbs).

Both paths lead to the same place: a five-seat Volvo SUV with all-wheel drive, strong performance and electric driving built in. Your routine decides which one fits best.
