Family life asks a lot from a vehicle. It has to carry children, grandparents, friends, sports gear and groceries, often all in the same week. It has to feel calm on a long highway drive and easy to live with on a busy school morning.
The 2027 Volvo XC90 was designed with those days in mind. It has three rows of seats, a long list of safety technology and two electrified powertrains to choose from. Here is a closer look at what makes this seven-seat SUV such a good fit for family driving.
Three Rows With Room for Everyone
The XC90 seats seven people across three rows. Every row gets real space, so the back seats work for more than short trips.
The front row has 1,038 mm of legroom and 987 mm of headroom. The second row has 940 mm of legroom and 979 mm of headroom. Even the third row has 811 mm of legroom and 923 mm of headroom.
Parents of young children will appreciate the ISOFIX mounting points in the rear seat, which make it easier to secure a child seat properly. The Plus trim includes an integrated booster cushion built into the rear seat, and it is an option on the Ultra trim. It is a simple idea that saves you from moving a booster seat between cars.
Cargo Space That Grows With Your Plans
A family SUV has to be flexible. Some days you need every seat. Other days you need to haul a new desk or a week of camping gear.
With the rear seats folded, the XC90 B6 AWD holds up to 1,950 L of cargo, and the T8 plug-in hybrid holds up to 1,941 L. Keep the second row in place and the B6 AWD still gives you 980 L behind it. The cargo area measures 1,903 mm from the front seatbacks to the tailgate, long enough for skis, a rolled-up rug or flat-packed furniture.
The XC90 is 4,953 mm long with a 2,984 mm wheelbase. That long wheelbase is a big part of why the cabin feels so open.
Safety Technology That Watches the Road With You
Safety is the reason many families look at Volvo first. The XC90 is built around an advanced safety cage, backed by a full set of active safety features that help protect the people inside and others on the road.
These systems work quietly in the background. You stay in charge of the drive, and the XC90 is ready to help if something unexpected happens.
Comfort for Long Drives and Short Naps
Children fall asleep more easily in a quiet, smooth car, and adults arrive less tired. The XC90 is tuned for both. Each damper adapts mechanically to the road surface to balance comfort and stability. Extra insulation in key areas of the body cuts down on wind and road noise.
The optional air suspension goes a step further. It works with an active chassis that monitors the car, the road and the driver 500 times per second. It can also lower the XC90 by 20 mm to make getting in and out easier, or raise it by 40 mm for rough terrain.
On the Plus trim, heated front and rear seats keep everyone comfortable on cold mornings. Regular over-the-air software updates help keep the XC90 current over time.
Two Electrified Powertrains to Choose From
Every 2027 XC90 comes with all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic transmission. You choose how much electric help you want.
Both versions come in three trims: Core, Plus and Ultra.
