2021 Volvo XC40 vs. 2021 BMW X1: Experience Better Powertrains, Scandinavian Design, and Safety

2021 Volvo XC40 vs. 2021 BMW X1: Experience Better Powertrains, Scandinavian Design, and Safety

The XC40 continues to impress in 2021 with a new all-electric powertrain, two gas engine options, top safety features, immersive luxury, and more. Although this is a subcompact luxury crossover, it is meant to go big in everything else. Volvo ensures that each model impresses with abundant equipment and an enjoyable driving experience.

There are several competitors in the luxury subcompact segment. Here, we discuss how the XC40 compares by lining it up with the 2021 BMW X1.

The 2021 Volvo XC40 has more power options

The XC40 features three powertrains in its lineup. Although the XC40 is Volvo's subcompact SUV, it goes big on everything else. Available in two models, the T4 engine consists of a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that generates 187 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. The T5 engine is standard/available in three models and outputs 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Before we mention the XC40's final powertrain, let's look under the hood of the X1.

The only available powertrain for the BMW X1 is a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder that generates 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. It has 20 fewer horsepower than the Volvo XC40's T5 engine.

The XC40 tops its offerings with the Recharge, an all-electric model that makes driving even more fun. With 402 horsepower and 486 lb-ft of torque, it is ready to take on many roads and paths throughout Canada. Each trip has up to a 335 km range and can charge 0%-80% in only 40 minutes with 150kW DC fast charging.

The XC40 has more choices and better power capabilities than the X1.

The 2021 XC40 focuses on safety

Volvo shows that subcompact vehicles can impress when reviewed for safety—just ask IIHS. They awarded the XC40 with a 2021 Top Safety Pick + designation. It received high rankings in crash avoidance and mitigation, side front impact results, roof strength, structure and safety cage, and so much more.

Overall, the XC40 offers better protection. But it also provides more style and technology than the X3. It’s minimalistic, yet very refined interior offers plenty of technologies, like the Sensus infotainment system, which is much more intuitive than the X1’s infotainment option.
