The XC90 is quickly becoming a favourite SUV around the world. Known for its technology, efficiency, versatility, and more, the XC90 is becoming even more known in Canada. The lineup offers three powertrains (including a hybrid) that feature up to 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque. The series has much more to offer.
There are competitors in the XC90's segment, including the Mercedes-Benz GLE. Here, we line up both vehicles and compare them in specific categories.
The 2021 Volvo XC90 has powertrains that mean business
One of the best qualities of the XC90 is the variety of powertrains. The T5 engine offers 5- and 7-passenger Momentum trims four-cylinder turbocharged power that outputs 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.
The T6 powertrain is offered across all petrol models, and it generates 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. With a highway fuel consumption rating of 8.7 L/100 km, long and short trips don't have to mean a big expense. The GLE's comparable powertrain increases highway fuel consumption to 9.2 L/100 km.
The XC90 Recharge is fitted with the T8 Twin Engine that includes a 313-horsepower petrol motor and 87-horsepower electrical system that nets 400 horsepower. It also achieves an outstanding combined fuel consumption rating of 8.8 L/100 km, beating each GLE model.
The GLE also offers the AMG range of models. Although they lead in performance, they also lead (by far) in price. As a matter of fact, the AMG GLE 63 S is nearly double the cost of a T5-equipped XC90 Momentum. This makes the AMG selection virtually a new class of vehicles.
The 2021 Volvo XC90 is more spacious and more stylish
Scandinavian style is a truly unique characteristic that can only be found in a Volvo. It makes for a more comfortable and more ergonomic environment than the GLE. But it’s also technologically advanced, with features like the Pilot Assist and the Sensus infotainment system.
Another important feature that adds value to the XC90 is cargo capacity. With the third-row folded, the XC90 offers 1,019 litres of capacity behind the middle row. The two-row GLE only offers 630 litres behind the rear row. The XC90 is more convenient when you need extra space.
