The XC40 is taking the luxury subcompact world over with exciting capabilities, outstanding safety, and Volvo engineering and comfort. A part of a new generation of Volvo vehicles that are focused on efficiency, the XC40 now offers a powerful, all-electric model in the lineup. Combine this with two available and efficient gas options, and the XC40 family is perfect for your family!
However, there are competitors in the segment. Here, we compare the XC40 to the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLB.
The 2021 Volvo XC40 has modernized powertrains
The XC40 offers three total powertrains, two gas engines and one electric. The T4 engine, offered in two models, produces 187 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. With a starting MSRP of $39,950, it is the best-priced model in this comparison and nearly $7,000 less than the MSRP of a base GLB.
The XC40 moves up to the T5 in three trims. It features an output of 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The GLB 250 peaks at 221 horsepower, so you will feel a difference in the XC40.
The AMG GLB 35 moves ahead with 302 horsepower, but has a $57,500 base MSRP. You can buy a well-equipped XC40 Inscription for just under $50,000.
However, the star of the show is not an AMG Mercedes-Benz. Instead, the XC40 Recharge gets the spotlight with fantastic, all-electric power that outranks the AMG GLB 35 in multiple ways. It generates 100 more horsepower than its competitor with a range of 335 km--plenty to enjoy long trips and find charging stations along the way. The XC40 Recharge can also fill its battery to 80% capacity in just 40 minutes with fast-charging capability.
We conclude the XC40 is the better performer and priced better than the GLB.
The 2021 XC40 is a safe bet
Subcompact vehicles aren't all made the same. Volvo engineered the XC40 to ensure that it stands at the right side of safety. As a matter of fact, the XC40 is designated as an IIHS 2021 Top Safety Pick+. Owners have a peace of mind in knowing it receives outstanding ratings in crash avoidance and mitigation, side front impact results, structural testing, and other areas. The GLB is unrated.
