How the Numbers Add Up
Volvo tracks the EX30's environmental impact in two ways: the emissions created before the car ever reaches a dealer, and its footprint over a full driving lifecycle.
- Cradle-to-gate CO2 impact — meaning the emissions from raw material extraction through to the finished car arriving at the dealership — comes in at an estimated 18 tonnes
- Total carbon footprint over 200,000 km of driving is estimated at below 30 tonnes, the lowest of any Volvo car to date
- The EX30 is designed to be recovered at the end of its life at a rate of 95 percent, through a combination of material recycling and energy recovery
Volvo also uses blockchain technology to trace critical battery raw materials, including lithium, manganese, cobalt, graphite, and nickel, back through the supply chain — a detail that matters for buyers who want to know where the materials in their battery pack actually came from.
The Manufacturing Side of the Equation
Materials are only part of the picture. How and where a car is built also affects its overall footprint, and Volvo applied the same scrutiny to its EX30 production process as it did to the materials list.
- The EX30 is built in a factory powered by high levels of climate-neutral energy, including 100 percent climate-neutral electricity
- The vehicle's stamped body parts are produced using one of Volvo's highest rates of material utilization during manufacturing, reducing waste at the production stage
- The majority of Tier 1 suppliers involved in building the EX30 have committed to sourcing 100 percent renewable energy for their own production
Taken together, these choices mean the EX30's environmental story doesn't stop at the materials themselves — it extends into how efficiently those materials are turned into a finished vehicle in the first place.
